Guidelines for Storing Custom Medals

Custom-made medals often hold significant commemorative and collectible value; proper storage not only preserves their appearance but also extends their lifespan. Given the variations in materials, surface finishes, and storage environments, it is important to take precautions against moisture, scratches, and oxidation.

First, select a dry, well-ventilated storage environment. Metal medals exposed to humidity for extended periods may oxidize or discolor. Therefore, avoid placing medals in high-humidity areas such as bathrooms or near windows, and minimize contact with moisture, sweat, and chemical substances.

While the electroplating, enamel, or color-filled sections of a medal are durable, they can still be scratched by hard objects. Use dedicated medal boxes, velvet pouches, or transparent display cases for protection, and avoid stacking medals directly on top of one another to prevent abrasion.

Regular inspection and simple cleaning are recommended. Remove everyday dust by gently wiping with a soft, dry cloth; avoid using abrasive fabrics or corrosive cleaning agents. If fingerprints or stains appear, clean the surface gently and dry it immediately to prevent residual moisture from affecting the finish.

If the medal includes a lanyard, clasp, or other decorative accessories, these should also be protected individually. During long-term storage, check the lanyard for moisture damage or aging and inspect metal connectors for looseness to ensure the medal remains in good condition for future display or wear.

For medals of special significance-such as those from competitions, corporate awards, or commemorative events-consider using a display cabinet or a custom display case. A well-chosen display method not only protects the medal but also effectively showcases its commemorative value and the honor it represents.
