While sports medals are primarily intended for commemoration and collection, they require proper maintenance for long-term preservation. Correct care prevents issues such as oxidation, fading, and scratching, helping to maintain the medal's original luster and integrity while extending its lifespan.

When storing sports medals, avoid humid environments as much as possible. Prolonged exposure to high humidity can cause metal medals to oxidize or discolor. Therefore, it is advisable to store them in a dry, well-ventilated area and avoid prolonged exposure to direct sunlight, which can alter the surface color.

When cleaning medals, choose a method appropriate for the material. For ordinary dust, gently wipe the surface with a soft, dry cloth; avoid using rough materials that could cause scratches. If there are fingerprints or stains, a small amount of neutral detergent may be used, followed by immediate drying. For medals featuring electroplating, enamel (baked lacquer), or color-fill finishes, avoid strong acidic or alkaline cleaning agents to prevent damaging the surface coating.

Care should also be taken when displaying or storing medals. Using dedicated display boxes, velvet pouches, or transparent protective covers helps minimize the impact of dust and airborne impurities. Additionally, avoid stacking multiple medals directly against one another to prevent scratches caused by friction.

For medals of special commemorative significance, perform periodic inspections to check for signs of aging or damage to the ribbon, attachment clasp, and the medal itself. If minor oxidation or surface issues are detected, seek professional treatment promptly to prevent the problem from worsening.
